This is a full magnum of Silver Lake 1994 Reserve Merlot. This bottle was offered for auction at the 6th Annual Wine Festival, and it took first place! The bottle is etched with a darling bird on a bird house design that was designed by Jennifer, age 9.

Reliable as usual, this soft, cherry and vanilla-flavored Merlot is pure varietal, fruity and ready to drink immediately. The tannins are extremely light, through a hint of green wood and oak sneaks into the finish. The result is an easy-drinking Merlot laced with black fruit and bittersweet chocolate. The 2009 Pinot Noir UV-SL Vineyard is dazzling. It reveals all of the qualities that make Pinot here so compelling. In the 2009 I find expressive aromatics that meld seamlessly into the fruit, not to mention a gracious yet powerful personality. A super-refined finish has the last say in this moving, breathtaking wine. The UV-SL vineyard is just four miles from the Pacific Ocean. There is an energy and vitality in the wine I find totally irresistible. The 2009 Pinot Noir UV Vineyard reveals a medium ruby color with purple nuances that is clearly less saturated than the 2008 or 2007 Pinot Noirs. A powerful perfume of spice box, subtle oak, damp earth, red and black currants, pomegranate and sweet strawberries is followed by a broad, flavorful red.

A richly detailed riot of flavors, this outstanding Pinot Noir offers notes of lavender and rosemary on the nose and flavors of strawberry and raspberry on the palate, with hints of beetroot, clean earth and anise. The finish adds a lingering, resonant flavor of pastis.

Located in Washington State’s San Juan Islands, Orcas Island Distillery is truly a family affair, being run by father and son Charles and Morgan West, along with their spouses Carie DeRuiter and Diane West.

Nose: An interesting combination of scents starts with light layers of warm oak mingled with barley, a touch of barrel char, vanilla, shelled peanuts, and hay. These are propped up against a noticeable scent of pink bubble gum. The scents are light yet defined, producing a warm opening to the sip.

Palate: The lightness of the nose carries over the palate. Notes of toasted barley, salty sea air, hay, and hints of baking chocolate make an appearance. Laying underneath these flavors are traces of oak. The combination works well together yet due to its lightness, it leaves you wanting more pronounced flavor definitions. It’s a nuanced palate and one you’ll need to really take your time to focus on to get the most out of it.

Finish: The finish ramps up the intensity of flavors as toasted barley, baking chocolate, white peppercorn, and oak come alive. Propped up by a light heat, this sudden intensity of flavors is a welcome contrast to what the palate delivered. As the finish goes on, the initial flavors mellow out and a malted chocolate flavor bubbles up. Joining the malted chocolate flavor is a warm lingering heat that hugs your chest. The old saying of leaving them wanting more applies here, as the finish is easily the highlight of the sip.

50 Fathoms Gin: We distill 50 Fathoms Gin in the painstaking, Old World, London Dry style and give it a Southeast Alaska twist with hand-harvested local spruce tips, whole juniper berries, cinnamon, and coriander. (That unique citrus finish comes from tangerines grown in our family grove in California; if Alaska was warm enough, we’d grow them here.)
